01/28/2007 - Federer Clinches 10th Grand Slam Title
Roger Federer became the first player in the Open Era to win three consecutive Grand Slam titles twice in his career when he stopped the magnificent run of 26-year-old Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4 in the Australian Open final Sunday. Federer, who extended his winning streak to a career-best 36 matches, became the first player to win a Grand Slam title without dropping a set since Swede Bjorn Borg captured his fifth of six Roland Garros crowns in 1980 - and the first time at the Australian Open since Ken Rosewall in 1971. The ATP World No. 1 is also the first player to successfully defend the Australian Open title since Andre Agassi in 2001. Federer captured his 10th career Grand Slam title in his 31st major championship to join American Bill Tilden in joint-fifth on the all-time leaderboard. Only Borg and Rod Laver (11 titles), Roy Emerson (12) and Pete Sampras (14) have won more major titles.
