Who could suppose the Croatia and Slovak Republic at the final of the most popular team competition - Davis Cup by BNP Paribas at the beginning of the year? Unconditionally the main favorites were the USA (Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, Bob and Mike Bryan!), Argentina and Australia. But Ms. Fortune thought in another way.

The main part of the Slovak Republic team's success related to the lucky lot. All the matches of the Slovakian team took place in the Sibamac Arena National Tennis Centre, Bratislava, Slovak Republic. The path to the tournament final was thorny. The first tie they received the victors of the Davis Cup by PNP Paribas -2005 - the team of Spain. The Spaniards proposed the youth team, which couldn't defeat the experienced Karol Beck and Dominik Hrbaty on hard (4-1). The next rivals - the Dutchmen just beaten the Switzerland team. The Sjeng Schalken absence promoted to the easy victory of the friendly Slovakian pair 4-1. The next tie was the first in the Slovak Republic team history semifinal of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group. It was the battle with the tournament sensation - the winners of the Australia on grass - the Argentina team. Worthy of respect rivals, aren't they? Only David Nalbandian repulsed to the Slovakians. The score 4-1 became a tradition.
 
Ivan Ljubicic is the Davis Cup-2005 hero. He captured the most popular team tennis tournament trophy of the year for his team, for his country, for himself. In particular his wins determined the Croatia victory in the tournament first tie with USA (Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, and Bryan brothers in doubles with Mario Ancic). The next tie and the next Ljubicic triplet: Victor Hanescu, Andrey Pavel and the double. The Romania team defeated 4-1. The match with Russia went in the same way. Nikolay Davydenko, Mikhail Youzhny and the double gave in under the Goran Ivanisevic successor gun aces.  But the final exceeded all expectations.

The first news of the final was Goran Ivanisevic went to Bratislava only for title. A free place is keeping among his numerous trophies. The next news was Karol Beck had injured. He'd not take part in the match. The main figures of the meeting were Ivan Ljubicic and Dominic Hrbaty. Hrbaty is known as a perfect team player (Hoffman cup - 2005 with Daniela Hantuchova). But the Beck absence made the Dominik's problem more difficult. Ljubicic defeated Karol Kucera easily in the first match. There was the Hrbaty riposte in the next game. He conquered Mario Ancic in 4 sets. The double was dramatic. Everybody knew the winners of the match are the latent winners of the tournament. Equal enough fight, 2 tie-breaks, but the Croatians small advantage was fixed in score 7-6(5), 6-3, 7-6(5). It was seemed the Croatia clinched the title. But tireless Ljubicic had trembled. 5 sets of the hardened fight and Hrbaty won 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The title fate was holding in the Mario Ancic and Michal Mertinak hands. Mario won 7-6(1), 6-3, 6-4. Who knows if Karol Beck was in court at that time where the trophy in this team competition would spend next year.
