05/14/2005 - Federer is Chasing His Third Hamburg Title

Roger Federer is aiming for his third Hamburg title.

World No. 1 Roger Federer defeated Argentinian Guillermo Coria in two close sets 6-4, 7-6(3) and moved into the semifinal dropping no one set the whole week. Swiss is 39-2 this year and 18-3 in Hamburg. Coria wasn't able to reach his six consecutive clay court Masters final. Federer next faces Russian No. 15 seed Nikolay Davydenko who overcame Italian Filippo Volandri 7-6(5), 6-4. Davydenko will appear in the Masters semifinals for the first time in his career. His previous best result was a quarterfinal in Monte-Carlo last year. Federer leads Davydenko 5-0 in career meetings, including two wins this year.

Frenchman qualifier Richard Gasquet breezed into the semifinal with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win over other qualifier Italian Andreas Seppi. Gasquet has reached his second Masters semifinal after Monte-Carlo this year. Frenchman improved to 9-2 for the year. Gasquet will now play Belgian sensation Christophe Rochus who continued his stunning run by rallying from a set down (second match in a row) to defeat Juan Ignacio Chela 3-6, 6-0, 6-3. It will be Rochus' debut appearance in the Masters semifinals. Chela has failed in fifth of his all five past Masters quarterfinal.

Two qualifiers reached the semifinals for the second time in Masters history after Paris 2004 (Radek Stepanek and Max Mirnyi)
