05/13/2005 - Coria vs Federer in QF. Gaudio, Henman Upset


Guillermo Coria will try to avenge a loss to Federer in their 2004 title match.

 

Top seed and defending champion Roger Federer, who is looking for his third title in Hamburg, brushed aside Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-2, 6-3 to set up a quarterfinal showdown with another former Hamburg champion Guillermo Coria who defeated Croatian Mario Ancic 6-4, 6-3. Argentinian will try to avenge his final loss to the Swiss here last year. Federer has got already 500 points in the ATP Race and improves his last year record when he had 486 points after his victory in Hamburg.

Argentinian Juan Igancio Chela rallied after dropping the first set to upset No. 5 seed Tim Henman 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Chela improved to 3-4 all time against Henman. Chela will now face qualifier Christophe Rochus who provided the other upset of the day taking out No. 4 seed Gaston Gaudio 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. Belgian will be making his first appearance in a quarterfinal of the Masters Series tournaments.

Russian Nikolay Davydenko (15) stopped former World No. 1 and qualifier Juan Carlos Ferrero from finding a path into the quarterfinals, defeating Spaniard 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Davydenko will now take on the day's other winner Italian Filippo Volandri who beat Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean 6-3, 6-4.

Richard Gasquet set up a quarterfinal battle of qualifiers with Andreas Seppi after crushing Dominik Hrbaty 6-1, 6-2. And Seppi overcame Czech Jiri Novak 6-3, 6-4.

For the first time in Masters Series history since 1990 three qualifiers and two Italians reached the quarterfinals.
